To get the most accurate reading:
- Hold your phone in open air. Make sure the microphone (usually at the bottom of your phone) isn’t covered by your hand or clothing.
- Check that the microphone is clear of dust or debris.
- Do not use the app to measure sudden impulse sounds, such as fireworks.
Keep in mind:
- The app can’t detect microphone damage.
- Some phone cases may obstruct sound readings.
- dB readings are A-weighted (dBA), which reflects how we hear sound.
- Our guidance is based on the live sound level at that moment, not your total daily exposure.
